How does sedentary lifestyle and routine physical exercise affect our state of health? What is its relationship to the heart and cardiorespiratory fitness? A new study led by professionals from Massachusetts General Hospital and Boston University (USA) has revealed new insights into how different types of physical activity affect cardiovascular and respiratory health.

The research, which has been published in the European Heart Journal , involves approximately 2,000 people who underwent a series of comprehensive cardiopulmonary exercise tests to measure physical fitness.

“By establishing the relationship between different forms of regular physical activity and detailed measures of physical fitness , we hope that our study will provide important information that can be used to improve physical fitness and overall health throughout life,” he says. in a statement the study’s author and assistant professor of medicine, Matthew Nayor.

Experts tried to understand this relationship and found that moderate-vigorous intensity physical exercise is associated with greater effectiveness in improving fitness. In detail, it is three times more efficient than walking and 14 times more than sitting.

Likewise, experts have found that spending more time each day exercising or walking could partially offset the negative effects of sedentary lifestyle. Maintaining a good physical condition is inherently related to health and is associated with a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and premature death.

What were the effects on the participants?
To carry out the research, the experts analyzed the participants’ physical activity data through devices (accelerometers) that measured the frequency and intensity of movement during a week at a certain time and eight years later.

As reported in Infosalus , after this analysis they discovered that people who had increased the number of daily steps, who participated in moderate-vigorous intensity activities or who reduced the time spent sedentary had improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness.

“We conducted this analysis to understand the relative effects of shifting from sedentary activity, from low-level physical activity, and from moderate to vigorous activity on multiple domains of exercise capacity as objectively measured by the cardiopulmonary exercise test.” explains the lead author of the work, Gregory D. Lewis.
